As a graduate student, intern, or resident you may be eligible to start the board certification process NOW through the ABPP Early Entry Program.
To be eligible for the Early Entry Option, an individual must not yet be licensed as a psychologist (at the independent, doctoral level of practice) and must either be a student in, or have graduated from, an APA or CPA-accredited or ASPPB/NR Designated doctoral program in psychology.
The practice of psychology increasingly has become complex and competitive. Certification by ABPP demonstrates that a psychologist has met the standards and possesses the competencies required in his or her specialty.

The ABPP Early Entry Option Value Statement
In addition to saving $100.00 on the application fee, participation in the Early Entry Program demonstrates an early commitment to lifelong professional development and identification with a specialized area of practice in professional psychology.
Here's how it works:
1) Complete an Application and submit the $25 fee (This is a $100 discount off the standard application fee-no further application fee will be due). Access the application.
2) No need to identify a particular specialty now, although you may.
3) Access mentoring early on to facilitate your progress
4) Submit your credentials (e.g., official transcript, internship completion certificate, etc) as you complete each phase of your training.
Some Benefits of ABPP Board Certification:
· Holding an increasingly valuable credential that is recognized by universities, hospitals, health service systems, and the public. Many hospitals and clinics require ABPP board certification. ABPP is the only psychology board certification that is recognized for salary increases within the Department of Veterans Affairs.
· Listing as a board certified specialist in the online ABPP Directory and in ABPP academy directories made available to the public, third parties, and colleagues.
· Supporting qualification as an expert witness.
· Eligibility for membership in the specialty academy.
· Receipt of, and opportunity to publish in, The ABPP Specialist, the official newsletter of the ABPP.
· Recognition by most licensing jurisdictions of ABPP Board Certification facilitates mobility. Over 35 states recognize ABPP in some fashion with respect to licensing of individual psychologists. This recognition most often means, in a practical sense, that the usual paperwork and forms collection/submission necessary for licensure may be reduced for a psychologist board certified by ABPP. Most states continue to require a jurisprudence examination covering that jurisdiction’s laws, rules and regulations. Some states recognize ABPP explicitly in law (i.e., the licensing act for psychology), while others may recognize ABPP in rule. For example, Florida law indicates that the Board of Psychology shall license an individual who demonstrates to the board that s/he is “…a diplomate in good standing with the American Board of Professional Psychology, Inc.” (F.S. 490.006 (1)(b)).
· Salary bonus benefits. Employers such as the US Public Health Service, US Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs have changed the work rules for all psychologists so that ABPP Board Certified Specialists will now routinely receive a Special Advancement for Achievement, which consists of a one-step pay increase “within grade”. This amounts to a permanent raise of approximately $2,500 per year for ABPP board certified specialists.
· Qualification for significant reduction of the premiums for liability practice insurance by the American Professional Agency.
· Most fundamentally, to meet the standard of a responsible profession that when offering specialty services to the public the professional psychologists offering such services should be certified in that specialty by the profession.
