Welcome - from the President

Stanton Marlan, PhD, ABPP

Board Certified in Clinical Psychology and Psychoanalysis

As the incoming President of the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all psychologists interested in the specialty of Psychoanalysis.

Part of our Board's mission is to identify national standards for education and training necessary for Board certification in the practice of psychoanalysis by licensed psychologists in North America. In addition to meeting the ABPP standards for all psychological specialties, our Board requires additional training in Psychoanalysis. We recognize an inclusive spectrum of psychoanalytic approaches: Freudian, Jungian, Lacanian, Object Relations, Interpersonal, Relational and others that make up traditional and newly developing psychoanalytic orientations in the education and training of analysts. Both meeting the ABPP standards and graduation from an institute or equivalency training are the prerequisites to sit for the National exam. This collegial exam is focused on competencies that cut across differing psychoanalytic models, while respecting theoretical differences and the manner in which psychoanalysis is practiced within different traditions.

Appointed Directors of our Board review each candidate's credentials and practice samples, and along with Fellows of the Academy, provide examinations for becoming a board certified specialist in the practice of Psychoanalysis. Our specialty Board and Academy is a member of the American Board of Professional Psychology and provides the only national competency-based certification available for psychologists in the specialty practice of Psychoanalysis.

Beyond national recognition as a Psychologist board certified in the practice of Psychoanalysis, this ABPP board certification provides helpful professional practice recognition for educational and health care institutions and many governmental organizations, as well as facilitates geographic practice mobility in North America. Many post-doctoral training programs for professional psychologists encourage their faculty members to become nationally board certified in their particular specialty.

If you desire board certification in the practice of Psychoanalysis, feel free to contact me or any Board Director or Academy Fellow with any questions you may have. Our ABPP Specialty website includes additional information you may find helpful.

Thank you for your interest in the Specialty Practice of Psychoanalysis.
