Ralph Mortensen, PhD, ABPP
Welcome to the Organizational and Business Consulting Psychology web pages. We’re glad that you are considering certification as a specialist. Our board is excited about the future of our specialty and we hope that you choose to apply.
ABPP began certifying Industrial/Organizational (I/O) psychology specialists more than 50 years ago. However, due to the limited number of licensed practitioners, the I/O board of the ABPP was dissolved. We replaced it with a restructured specialty and specialty board, the American Board of Organizational and Business Consulting Psychology (ABOBCP). Our board is a member of the ABPP. We welcome applicants from Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Human Factor Psychology, and Consulting Psychology, including psychologists involved in organizational coaching.
Our specialists have completed their graduate training in a number of different psychological disciplines. Organizational and Business Consulting Psychology is dedicated to the primary practice of psychology with organizations, especially consultation in business. Our specialty is a hybrid of traditional industrial/organizational psychologists and consulting psychologists. Many specialists are members of APA Division 14, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) or the Society of Consulting Psychology (SCP), APA Division 13. Some belong to SPIM, the Society of Psychologists in Management.
OBCP practitioners consult about such varied issues as employee selection, leadership effectiveness, teamwork, training, consumer psychology and organizational diagnosis and change. They may coach individual professionals, managers or executives about their career issues or job challenges. Client organizations may include nonprofits, government and private sector companies.
