The American Board of Professional Psychology is a non-profit corporation with a Board of Trustees elected for rotating terms. There is one Trustee position allotted for each specialty recognized by the ABPP. In addition, three Trustees are elected by the Board for fixed terms: the President, President-Elect, and Past-President. The Board of Trustees is the central governing body of the organization and is responsible for the appointment of an Executive Officer.

Specialty Boards (SBs) apply for affiliation with the ABPP as member boards of the organization. The SBs must represent a viable specialty in psychology by meeting a rigorous review of the specialty and the capacity to certify specialists through education and training criteria, professional standing and a performance examination. The SBs adhere to the standards and quality control required by the ABPP.

Academies are organizations of psychologists certified as specialists by the ABPP with common interests and goals around recruitment of potential specialists, continuing education, advocacy, and professional interests of the specialty. Although not part of the corporate structure of the ABPP, Academies have a special relationship to the ABPP.
